How Does Cloud Hosting Work?

What is cloud web hosting really? The term 'cloud' appears to be very fashionable in today's IT, World Wide Web and hosting lingo. Still, only a select few actually know what cloud hosting is. Maybe it is a clever idea to educate yourself about cloud web hosting services. To render a very long story succinct, we will first acquaint you with what cloud hosting is not.

1. Cloud Web Hosting is Not Confined to a Remote Disk Storage Solely.

1. Delivering a remote data storage service, which involves one file storage device for all customers, does not transform any particular web hosting supplier into an authentic cloud web hosting corporation.

The cPanel hosting providers call the ability to provide remote data storage solutions a cloud web hosting solution. Until now there is nothing bad about the cloud designation, but... we are talking about hosting services, not remote data storage solutions for private or corporate needs. There's always one "but", isn't there? It's not sufficient to call a shared web hosting solution, driven by a one-single-server hosting platform, precisely like cPanel, a "cloud web hosting" service. This is so because the remaining components of the whole hosting platform must be operating in exactly the same way - this does not refer only to the remote file storage. The remaining services entailed in the entire hosting procedure also have to be remote, isolated and "clouded". And that's extremely problematical. Very few service providers can really attain it.

2. It Involves Domain Names, Mail Addresses, Databases, File Transfer Protocols, CPs, and so on.

Cloud web hosting is not restricted to a remote data storage exclusively. We are talking about a web hosting service, serving a lot of domain names, web pages, e-mailboxes, and so on, aren't we?

To dub a hosting service a "cloud web hosting" one requires a lot more than furnishing plainly remote file storage mounts (or possibly servers). The email server(s) must be devoted exclusively to the e-mail linked services. Executing nothing else than these concrete tasks. There might be just one single or perhaps an entire set of mail servers, based on the overall server load generated. To have a real cloud web hosting service, the remote database servers should be performing as one, regardless of their actual quantity. Performing nothing else. The same is valid for the customers' CPs, the FTP, etc.

3. There are Cloud Domain Servers (DNSs) as well.

The DNSs (Domain Name Servers) of a real cloud web hosting plans provider will support multiple data center sites on different continents.

Here's an illustration of a Domain Name Server of a true cloud web hosting supplier:

dns1.fdshosting.co.uk

dns2.fdshosting.co.uk

If such a DNS is provided by your hosting plans provider, it's not a sure thing that there is a cloud web hosting platform in use, but you can absolutely be confident when you observe a Domain Name Server like the one underneath:

dns658.hostgator.com

dns659.hostgator.com

that there isn't any cloud hosting platform. This sort of DNS simply illustrates that the hosting environment in use is one-single-server based. Perchance it's cPanel. cPanel is a single-server hosting platform and maintains a market share of more than ninety eight percent. In cPanel's case, one physical machine takes care of all web hosting services (web, email, DNS, databases, FTP, hosting CP(s), files, etc.).

Remote File Storage - The Twisted Definition of Cloud Web Hosting.

So, a cloud web hosting solution is not restricted only to a remote file storage service, as lots of web hosting providers wish it was. Sadly for them, if that was the case, most of the file web hosting vendors would have been categorized as cloud web hosting ones a long time ago! They are not classified as such, because they merely furnish file web hosting solutions, not cloud web hosting services. The file web hosting platform looks really very simple, when compared to the web hosting platform. The remote disk storage platform is not a cloud web hosting platform. It cannot be, since it's only one small constituent of the whole cloud hosting platform. There's a lot more to be encountered in the cloud hosting platform: the hosting CP cloud, the database clouds (MySQL, PostgreSQL), the DNS cloud, the File Transfer Protocol cloud, the email cloud and... in the near future, perhaps a number of new clouds we currently are not aware of will turn up out of the blue.
